An Integrated Approach to Warehouse Safety

An Integrated Approach to Warehouse Safety

Integrated Safety

Safety is one of the most important components of any warehouse or distribution center operation. Just ask the warehouse manager! Safety not only plays into protecting personnel, it also impacts warehouse equipment conditions, the protection of products and goods, and overall efficiency and productivity. It’s never too late to get started implementing integrated safety measures in your operation.

Crown Equipment Corporation recently released their latest e-book, “An Integrated Approach to Forklift Safety,” that spells out how to create a safe and integrated work environment.

Here are some key takeaways to explore:

A Holistic Approach to Warehouse Safety

When it comes to forklift safety, the best approach is holistic. What exactly does that mean? A holistic approach to safety requires integrating all aspects of safety together so they work synergistically to create the safest work environment possible. While getting the individual aspects of safety (training, equipment, etc.) in place is important, what really makes the difference is connecting these aspects so they support one another. This creates a warehouse or distribution center with a complete culture of safety rather than one that simply meets safety requirements.

What are the components of a holistic approach to safety?

1. Equipment Design

One of the first and most important aspects of safety in a warehouse or DC is equipment design. Choosing the right forklift for the job is key to creating a safe work environment. Not only that, there are key design features that are available these days to make an operator’s job even safer and easier. Consider a forklift’s visibility, ergonomics, stability, traction, and more when deciding on the right equipment for your operation. Ultimately, selecting equipment designed around the operator is the best option. This means taking into consideration the daily tasks of your operators so you can select a design that will optimize operator comfort and safety.

2. Training

Safety training is a no-brainer for any warehouse or distribution center. However, simply having a training program isn’t sufficient anymore to keep a work environment safe. Do you have safety training for operators, supervisors, managers, and pedestrians? Have you continued to educate employees beyond their initial training sessions? Is safety training engaging for your employees? These are some good questions to ask when it comes to safety training in your facility. Be sure to come at your training from a top-down approach, and make sure your trainers are well-equipped to provide the best education for your employees.

Additionally, it’s important to continue training beyond the training room. Continue to coach operators while on the job. Don’t be afraid to give feedback and reinforce positive behaviors. Encourage your employees to support one another in safety, as well, by helping each other out and recognizing safe practices.

3. Connectivity and Optimization

A connected warehouse is a safe warehouse. By integrating warehouse management systems like InfoLink and Fleetstats, an operation can capture necessary data about their forklift fleet. Real-time incident alerts allow for quick response, and real-time system feedback gives operators the chance to make corrections on the job.

One of the greatest benefits of connectivity, though, is the opportunity it gives for operational optimization. Management can analyze the data collected and make decisions accordingly. Accident reporting and more provide needed insight to inform training as well as potential changes to be made on the warehouse or DC floor. Through connectivity and fleet management systems, operations have the chance for a greater understanding than ever before of what’s actually going on from a safety standpoint on the warehouse floor and can make sustainable changes accordingly.

4. Compliance Management

The final piece of the holistic safety puzzle is compliance management. An operation can have all the necessary safety measures in place, but without a way to measure and manage compliance, those measures will inevitably be ineffective.

Capturing data through a fleet management system gives management eyes on the pulse of the warehouse. Furthermore, systems like InfoLink have the ability to guide operators through daily forklift inspection processes digitally, allowing for OSHA requirement compliance as well as better organization of compliance records. Fleet management systems provide real-time notifications and alerts when maintenance is needed on a forklift, reducing the chance of downtime and related accidents. They also have the capability to control access to forklifts based on operator certification levels, so operators only have access to use lifts they are authorized to operate.

Ultimately, compliance management comes down to leadership’s ongoing participation in safety. Continued training, data analysis, and utilization of the technologies available allow an operation to manage safety compliance so safety becomes a practice and not just an idea.

The Benefits of Integrated Safety

There are two major benefits that come out of taking an integrated approach to safety

  1. Reduced accidents, injuries, and damaged equipment and goods
  2. Increased efficiency and productivity

A safe team is a productive team. Creating an environment where safety is the priority allows team members to focus on getting the job done. Operations save precious time and money when accidents are reduced, and operators do better work when they feel they are working in a safe workspace. All of this contributes to an overall more productive operation, giving you greater ROI.
